COSAM Supports Proposal to Prohibit Flavored Tobacco Products in Denver

On October 30th, the Colorado Society of Addiction Medicine (COSAM) sent a letter to the Denver City Council in support of a proposal to prohibit the sale of flavored tobacco products in the city.

In the letter, COSAM characterized flavored tobacco products as a significant threat to public health. Specifically, COSAM noted that flavored tobacco products pose a particular risk to young people. According to national estimates, e-cigarettes were the most used tobacco product among middle and high school aged students. Additionally, COSAM cited evidence indicating that e-cigarette use among Colorado youth is higher than the national average. As such, COSAM expressed support for the Denver City Council’s proposal to prohibit flavored tobacco products as a positive step to promote public health and mitigate subsequent combustible tobacco use.
